Gillian Perrett PhD, BA Fine Art, is a superannuated backpacker, who slipped in and out of academia along the way, and who continues to explore the world through her art.
“Storytelling, language-teaching, travelling, and simply being all nurtured my interest in the visual arts. I find my subject matter around me, whether I am at home or in a distant place. My work responds to the land, wherever I am, and often explores the elements of earth, water, fire and air.
“I try to counter the notion that what we see is fixed and permanent. We only imagine that we stand on firm ground. The earth’s crust is slowly changing, swept by winds and water, subject to tectonic forces, and subject to the depredations of humankind.
“I work both within traditional realistic codes and with codes that challenge realistic conventions. I work both slowly and fast. My favourite conventional media are pen and wash, and oils. Oil paint is best applied thick with a palette knife. I also use natural pigments that she collects and found objects, as well as acrylic, or encaustic paint.” |
